9 Suggested New Titles for Will Ferrell's Dubious New Comedy Casa de mi Padre
Maybe I’m still annoyed nearly ten years after I saw Anchorman in theaters and was so angry with its juvenile, unfunny, dude-baiting humor that I’m sour to any movie whose theme is “Will Ferrell is a hilariously alpha dimwit!” — but I’m pretty sure Ferrell’s new jam Casa de mi Padre with Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna is downright moronic for real. In fact, the sophisticated-sounding title isn’t a good fit for the film (though it is written entirely in Spanish) and ought to be replaced. Here are nine titles we’d consider, along with the movie’s new teaser trailer. 1. Y Su Pap Estpido Tambin 2. Telemundo Nights: The Ballad of Armando Alvarez 3. Armando Hug ‘N Kiss 4. Wedding Rancheros 5. The Adventures of Zorro’s Dumber Brother 6. We Bought a Zorro 7. A Mildly Amusing Rum Commercial Stretched to 104 Minutes 8. Bewitched 2 9. Macho Libre I think #9 is the best fit. Any to add? ‘Casa de mi Padre’ Teaser Trailer: A Brief New Look at Will Ferrell’s Spanish-Language Comedy [/Film]

'Ellen' Producer Sues Claiming Rabid Fans Were Targeted In Facebook Scam (Exclusive)
Getty Images Last month,Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino from Jersey Shore sued Abercrombie & Fitch over what he saw was a less-than-amusing publicity stunt. The retailer had offered him a "substantial payment" to stop wearing its clothes, and introduced a line of clothing that seemingly aped Sorrentino's famous catch phrases. In response, MPS Entertainment, the company owned by Sorrentino and his brother, filed a $4 million lawsuit alleging trademark violations, deceptive advertising and misappropriation of his publicity rights.our editor recommendsTHR's 5 Worst Celebrity Books of 2011: Jersey Shore, More Jersey Shore and the Levi Johnston-Bristol Palin Feud'Jersey Shore' Season 5 Trailer: Keeping Security Guards Employed Since 2009 (Video)'Jersey Shore's' The Situation Sues Abercrombie & Fitch for $4 MillionAbercrombie & Fitch Offers 'The Situation' Compensation to Not Wear Its Clothes PHOTOS: 'Jersey Shore's' Quotable Situation On Monday, Abercrombie & Fitch responded in court with a very detailed motion to dismiss. The clothing company tells a slightly different story of what happened. Additionally, the defendant attacks Sorrentino for weak trademark claims and says the Jersey Shorecastmember is interfering with its First Amendment right to make light of a troubling situation. Here's A&F's side of the story, which begins on an episode of Jersey Shorethat aired on August 11. Throughout the episode, A&F says that Sorrentino wore green Abercrombie sweat pants bearing its logo. PHOTOS: The Best and Worst Moments of 'Jersey Shore' The retailer says it was concerned that "the prominent display of its A&F logo would be viewed as an endorsement by A&F of the raucous behavior on the show." Reality TV shows often blur out brand names. Not this time, allegedly. So A&F sent a letter to MTV with a request that its marks be pixilated out of future episodes.Along with the demand allegedly came an offer that MTV, Sorrentino and other castmembers would be paid money for not wearing its products. Sorrentino's camp says it never got such an offer, but here's a look at the letter to MTVco-general counselGeorge Cheeks, revealing that the "substantial" offer to stop wearing A&F clothing was for $10,000: In his lawsuit, Sorrentino says that A&F's efforts to contact MTV were all part of a "marketing ploy." Even if MTV was contacted, the star says that such an offer was never conveyed to him. A&F responds that it doesn't matter. "Whether the offer letter went directly to Sorrentino is immaterial, and does not establish the falsity of the offer that Plaintiffs allege was made," the company writes in its motion to dismiss. Sounds good. Here's the problem: Was this a sincere and timely offer? The letter above is dated August 15, yet A&F had already had put out a press release three days earlier noting that it had offered compensation to Sorrentino to cease wearing A&F products. Additionally, although one presidential candidateis getting slammed as being out-of-touch for casually offering up a $10,000 bet in a recent debate, we'll wager that "up to $10,000" wouldn't impress many Hollywood dealmakers as being very "substantial." PHOTOS: Crazy Cases! 18 of Hollywood's Outrageous Entertainment Lawsuits A&F does somewhat better in attacking Sorrentino's claims that certain A&F clothing infringed his trademarks. A&F says it had placed an order in January 2010 for two t-shirts featuring phrases that parodied Jersey Shore. The company says that Sorrentino was aware of the parody t-shirts for almost a year and never objected. The retailer goes on to dispute Sorrentino's trademark dominion over "The Situation" and "GTL," saying the evidence shows merely that the reality star has applied to register those marks. The applications have not yet been granted by the U.S. Trademark Office. Additionally, the use and "good will" of the mark is questioned. It's noted that MPS supposedly acquired rights to a stylized upside-down "Situation" mark and design from a retailer named Yak Shoes, but A&F questions the validity of this assignment since there has been no transfer of business nor evidence that the mark and design has been used. Besides, A&F points out that the asserted trademark registration and A&F's clothing aren't very similar and its products are unlikely to confuse consumers. The clothing retailer provides some good reasoning to doubt whether Sorrentino will eventually succeed in registering GTL. It's pointed out that Viacom (parent company of MTV) actually holds a trademark registration for "GYM TANNING LAUNDRY" and has been offering on its website t-shirts for sale bearing "GTL." "Based on both MTV's and other Jersey Shore castmates' use of 'GTL', Plaintiffs cannot establish that they are the single source of goods being offered under the alleged mark 'GTL', and their unfair uncompetition and false designation of origin claim under 1125(a) must fail," says the brief. Perhaps most important is the question whether A&F's use of Sorrentino and his catch-phrases is constitutionally-protected free speech. A&F says that its shirts and use of the star's likeness was parody -- clearly a joke, not intended to convey sponsorship: "A&F's t-shirt bearing the phrase 'The Fitchuation' was a pun or turn of phrase, parodying Sorrentino's nickname for himself as 'The Situation'. As Plaintiffs plead, Sorrentino has appeared on several nationally televised programs and as such is a public figure, subject to being parodied by virtue of his presence in the public eye. Additionally, the t-shirt bearing the phrase 'G.T.L. (You Know The Deal) Fitch', was poking fun at the Jersey Shore castmates self proclaimed habit of doing the 'GTL', i.e. 'gym, tanning laundry.' We have no idea what makes the average guido in Jersey laugh, and we know the old saying that the best way to kill a joke is to explain it, but was this actually humorous? Whether the judge chuckles and chucks....stay tuned. E-mail: eriqgardner@yahoo.com Twitter: @eriqgardner PHOTO GALLERY: View Gallery 'Jersey Shore': The Quotable Situation
'Dictator' Trailer: Sacha Baron Cohen Assumes Obama, Kardashians And Much More
It has been a while since we have been told by Sacha Baron Cohen around the solo comedy front. In 2006, every annoying person you realize outfitted as Borat for Halloween, but growing knowledge of his mockumentary tactics managed to get increasingly more hard for Cohen to film without having to be observed. Signal "The Dictator," a typically Cohen character who is not making his debut mockumentary style. A clip for that film, which just showed up via Moviefone, discloses a really traditionally shot undertake a really wacky character -- half the normal formula, up-to-date for modern occasions. It opens with newsreel footage of Leader Obama and Secretary of Condition Hillary Clinton talking about a dreadful tyrant who's controlled his country for more than 40 years. That may be a significant documentary about Gaddafi or Saddam or another person, right? After that it cuts to Cohen because the eponymous dictator for any montage of ostentatious goofiness, using the bearded leader crowing upon reaching New york city, "Ah, America, the birthplace of Helps!" So yes, not so serious! Without anyone's knowledge, you will find stars like John C. Reilly and Ben Kingsley (that guy will act in anything). Gleam cameo by Megan Fox, apparently playing herself, whom the dictator pays lots of money to rest with, along with a cheap, pointed search in the Kardashians. That'll use it componen using the other low brow Cohen classics, though we are unsure anything could eclipse the abundance of genitalia that blared on the watch's screen in "Bruno." We are still washing our eyes from that certain. "The Dictator" will drop in May 2012, and we'll surely see much more over-the-top clips until then. Inform us that which you think about the "Dictator" trailer within the comments section as well as on Twitter!

Silent Witness
Dermot Mulroney and Michael Cudlitz in "Silent Witness"
Filmed in Toronto by Sandbar Pictures and Howard Braunstein Films. Executive producers, Lizzie Friedman, Greg Little, Howard Braunstein; supervising producer, Steve Solomos; producer, Deborah Marks; director, Peter Markle; writer, Thomas Michael Donnelly; based on the book by Richard North Patterson.Tony Lord - Dermot Mulroney
Sam Robb - Michael Cudlitz
Kate Robb - Anne Heche
Ramos - Anthony Ruivivar
Stella Marz - Lisa Berry
Saul Rubin - Judd HirschA tawdry tale of small-town sex and violence with just enough twists to keep the predictable action compelling, "Silent Witness" presents an adequate defense for TNT's "Mystery Movie Night" experiment. Based on the 1997 bestseller by Richard North Patterson, the largely courtroom-set thriller dips into themes of friendship, middle-aged anxiety, defense attorney ethics and the past's inexorable grip on the present. The shallow but competent outcome should have ratings prospects in line with other movies in the four-week wheel. Hotshot defense attorney Tony Lord (Dermot Mulroney) reluctantly returns to his hometown of Lake City, Ohio, when his childhood best friend Sam Robb (Michael Cudlitz) is accused of murdering a high school track star. Buddies and former all-star athletes, the bond between Tony and Sam has already survived one high-profile murder case: Back when they were teens, Tony was accused but acquitted of killing his girlfriend, and Sam never doubted his friend's innocence. When the tables are turned, Tony isn't sure he can say the same about Sam. Not helping matters: Tony discovers 46-year-old assistant principal Sam wasn't just coaching the 16-year-old victim to track-meet victories, he was sleeping with her, too. But Sam insists he isn't a killer and Tony takes the case, disregarding the advice of his mentor (Judd Hirsch) that, "In criminal defense, old friends are not the best clients." After all, Sam's wife Kate (Anne Heche) -- who also went to high school with the guys -- had just as much motive to off her husband's young lover, and the victim had a questionable bond with another older man (Anthony Ruivivar). The title provides perhaps too big a clue to the mystery's resolution, but director Peter Markle ("Flight 93") oversees the courtroom action and Tony and Sam's fractured friendship with smooth efficiency, placing equal emphasis on plot twists and emotional beats. His straightforward visual style keeps the story moving along without distraction, even in brief flashbacks to the characters' '80s glory days. The capable cast dutifully goes through the motions. If this is an audition for Mulroney to headline his own TNT series, he'd do just fine. It's more disappointing to see the kooky energy Heche brings to a ho-hum role get sidelined by the extensive legal battles. "Silent Witness" won't be a resume highlight for anyone involved, but a few overwrought scenes aside, it's not an embarrassment either.Camera, Mark Irwin; production designer, Franco de Cotiis; editor, Scott Boyd; music, Velton Ray Bunch; casting, Cathy Sandrich-Gelfond, Tina Gerussi, Amanda Mackey. 120 MIN. CBS tops Thursday in demos
CBS comedy smash ''The Big Bang Theory'' was far and away primetime's top-rated program on Thursday, powering the net to a demo victory over Fox, which saw declines for ''The X Factor.'' With ABC's ''Grey's Anatomy'' on the sidelines, Fox's ''Bones'' and CBS' ''Person of Interest'' were the night's top dramas in demos. According to preliminary national estimates, the first CBS Thursday victory of the season in adults 18-49 was paced by a big showing by ''The Big Bang Theory'' (5.2/15 in 18-49, 14.8 million viewers overall), which was up nearly 20% from the same night last year, and a winning perf at 8:30 p.m. by ''Rules of Engagement'' (3.6/10 in 18-49, 11.0 million viewers overall), which itself fared 20% better than ''Bleep My Dad Says'' in the timeslot a year ago. The comedies were followed by dramas ''Person of Interest'' (2.6/7 in 18-49, 11.6 million viewers overall) and ''The Mentalist'' (2.5/7 in 18-49, 12.1 million viewers overall), both down about 15% from last year's 9-11 p.m. dramas (''CSI'' and ''Mentalist'') still, ''Person'' was the No. 1 drama of the night in adults 25-54 (3.7/8). At Fox, ''The X Factor'' was on the low side (3.0/8 in 18-49, 9.5 million viewers overall), placing second in the 8 o'clock hour and jumping sharply in its second half-hour (3.4 vs. 2.7). The net then moved to the 18-49 lead at 9 o'clock with ''Bones'' (2.8/7 in 18-49, 8.8 million viewers overall), which took advantage of ''Grey's Anatomy's'' absence to grow week to week and lead all dramas for the night in 18-49. ABC helped its cause by airing a Katie Couric ''20/20'' special on Regis Philbin (1.5/4 in 18-49, 8.0 million viewers overall), which performed about 35% better than last week's episode of ''Charlie's Angels'' in the timeslot. The special was followed by a two-hour episode of ''Private Practice'' (2.5/7 in 18-49, 7.2 million viewers overall), which was down from its hourlong averages of last week but still edged out ''The Mentalist'' as the top-rated 10 p.m. broadcast series in 18-49. At NBC, ''Community'' (1.6/5 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall) and ''Parks and Recreation'' (2.0/5 in 18-49, 3.7 million viewers overall) were up week to week, finishing ahead of ABC's ''20/20'' special in demos. They were followed by ''The Office'' (2.9/7 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall), which was in line with last week and led its half-hour in 18-49, and ''Whitney'' (1.9/5 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall), down a couple of ticks week to week. Also down was outgoing 10 p.m. drama ''Prime Suspect'' (1.1/3 in 18-49, 4.4 million viewers overall). Ashton Kutcher Apologizes for Defending Joe Paterno on Twitter, and More in the Morning Grind
Some-time movie star Ashton Kutcher (look for 'New Year's Eve' in December!) jammed his foot firmly inside his mouth in front of 8,265,596 close friends on Wednesday night, when he defended ousted Penn State coach Joe Paterno on Twitter. "How do you fire Jo Pa?" Kutcher wrote in the tweet that has since been deleted. "#insult #noclass as a hawkeye fan I find it in poor taste." The problem? Paterno, a legendary college football coach who has been on the Penn State sidelines since the 1950s, was let go by Penn State's Board of Trustees because of his inaction against former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, a man accused of 40 accounts of child-sex abuse. (The story is disgusting and unsettling, but you can find out more here.) Kutcher wasn't aware of all that, however, and came under fire from Twitter users after his remark -- especially because of his recent anti-child-sex trafficking crusade. "As an advocate in the fight against child sexual exploitation, I could not be more remorseful for all involved in the Penn St. case," Kutcher later wrote after deleting his first remark. "As of immediately I will stop tweeting until I find a way to properly manage this feed. I feel awful about this error. Won't happen again." [LAT/ShowTracker] Mickey Rourke wasn't lying. CBS Films has hired Woody Harrelson to play a persnickety gangster in 'Seven Psychopaths' for director Martin McDonagh. Harrelson joins Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken in the black-comedy thriller. "The director was a jerkoff. He wanted a whole lot for nothing," Rourke, who was initially tapped for the role Harrelson just got, told Moviefone late last week. "He can go play with himself." Or Woody. Err. [Coming Soon] In case you were holding your breath: 'The Dark Knight Rises' prologue -- which will hit IMAX theaters with prints of 'Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol' on Dec. 16 -- has been rated PG-13. [Coming Soon] Because you can't go five hours without reading about Brett Ratner: he told Howard Stern his next project will be a remake of 'The Last American Virgin.' No word yet whether rehearsals will be involved. [CinemaBlend] Most audiences won't get to see Madonna's film-festival derided 'W.E.' until 2012. The Weinstein Company will release the film for a one-week awards qualifying run on Dec. 9 before unspooling it for wide audiences on Feb. 3. The move is reportedly being done to capitalize on Madge's supposed Super Bowl halftime show performance; never mind that she isn't actually in 'W.E.,' or confirmed for the Super Bowl. [THR] James Remar, James Russo and Tom Wopat have been added to the hilariously massive cast of 'Django Unchained.' Jonah Hill was up for a role too, but he had to pass because of scheduling conflicts. Womp womp. [Variety] [Photo: WireImage] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED

Leo Talks Taking On J. Edgar & Bringing 3-D To Great Gatsby
First Published: November 6, 2011 4:39 PM EST Credit: Caption Leonardo DiCaprio attends the AFI FEST 2011 Presented By Audi - J. Edgar Opening Night Gala at Graumans Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on November 3, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Leonardo DiCaprio is hoping to help bring a fresh take to a classic story, when he stars in the latest big screen version of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel The Great Gatsby, slated to hit theaters Christmas 2012. And besides a slew of sexy modern faces Leo will share the screen with the likes of Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher in the film the producers are also bringing another modern-day twist to the reboot: 3-D technology. Were shooting The Great Gatsby in Australia right now and whats really cool is working with [director] Baz [Luhrmann] and this 3-D format thats being used for drama, Leo told Access Hollywoods Billy Bush, while promoting his latest movie, J. Edgar, in Los Angeles over the weekend. Most of the time, you associate 3-D with the spectacle of it, but he really wants to use 3-D to create emotional impact with the characters and almost use it like what it would be like to immerse yourself in a theater production, Leo explained. So Im having a good time with that. Plus, its the great American novel. Im having a great time with the material for sure, he added. When it comes to his current project, J. Edgar, Leo said there was plenty that drew him to portraying such a historic, yet controversial, figure J. Edgar Hoover. What interested you in Hoover? Billy asked Leo. He was always a very mysterious figure in American history. His personal life was always shrouded in mystery I never could quite put my finger on it, the star said. He was this bulldog figure, he was sort of the face of the FBI, he changed our country in a time of great lawlessness where bank robbers were going from state to state robbing banks, becoming local heroes. He sort of cleaned up all that mess he was creating this new federal police force single-handedly. But then, there are all those salacious rumors that you heard about him too. So, it was very exciting to see somebodys very specific take on who J. Edgar Hoover was through these different time periods from the beginning of his career and how he was this very ambitious young man that created this police force all the way to the end of his life where he, you know, became a political dinosaur and didnt adapt to the changing of our country, Leo concluded. Despite the ranging opinions on Hoovers legacy, Leo said he didnt see any risk in taking on the role. If there is a risk, I think that that may be something that other people might attribute to this character. But to me, it was a no-brainer. Its like, how often do you get to portray somebody with this much complexity and intrigue? Leo suggested. I mean, this guy had a crock pot of different eccentricities and thats like an actors dream. So I just looked at it as that perspective like how could I not play this character? he said. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. Vaquero
A BDCine/MiraCine production. Produced by Diego Dubcovsky. Executive producer, Sebastian Ponce. Directed, written by Juan Minujin. With: Juan Minujin, Leonardo Sbaraglia, Pilar Gamboa, Daniel Fanego, Guillermo Arengo, Esmeralda Mitre, Alberto Suarez.A consistently fascinating and occasionally suspenseful study of a Buenos Aires actor whose ambition may be curdling into obsession, "Vaquero" is all the more intriguing if you know it's the feature filmmaking debut of lead player Juan Minujin, a veteran Argentine thesp who has enjoyed considerably more success than his onscreen alter ego. Indeed, it's tempting to read the entire pic as Minujin's alternately scared and simpatico consideration of disasters avoided and setbacks transcended. This well-crafted indie drama may be too low-key and specialized for mainstream auds, but should spark interest in fest and noncommercial exhibition. The elliptical plot pivots on Julian Lamaz (Minujin), a 33-year-old actor who struggles to maintain an affable demeanor while going nowhere fast in his career. Opening scenes establish his fringe status, showing Julian dividing his time between appearing in the Buenos Aires equivalent of an Off Broadway comedy -- opposite a co-star who get all the big laughs -- and playing a supporting character who's routinely pummeled by the macho hero in a hardboiled thriller. Alone, Julian vents his frustrations in voiceover monologues that run the gamut from furious jealousy to even angrier self-loathing. One moment, he's dissing successful actors who, to his mind, are no more talented than he is. The next moment, he unleashes his contempt on himself, admitting, in shockingly funny, blunt-spoken fashion, that he's entirely too fond of viewing Internet porn. "I'll spend the rest of my life," he snarls, "grabbing my cock like it's a handrail." Here and there, Minujin indirectly acknowledges the influence of "Taxi Driver" as "Vaquero" offers an up-close look at a human time bomb. To be sure, Julian never goes as far as Travis Bickle when it comes to uncaging his id. But the potential for a violent outburst remains ever present, so that the aud is poised to expect the worst when Minujin finally gets to audition for what he thinks is a major movie role in an American-produced Western, only to realize much too late that he has prepared for the wrong part. "Vaquero" as whole feels infused with insider info and firsthand experience, and many details -- especially those regarding audition interviews and on-set etiquette -- have the solid ring of truth. Occasionally, the pic plays like a darker and more dangerous version of "Salut l'artiste," Yves Robert's classic 1973 dramedy starring Marcello Mastroianni as a stage and screen bit player. Given Minujin's own background, however, "Vaquero" also recalls Michael Caine's famous description of the gangster he portrayed in "Get Carter" as "the ghost of Michael Caine" -- the man he could have turned out to be if he'd made the wrong move, or not gotten the right break. Lucio Bonelli's nimble lensing is the pic's standout production value.Camera (color, HD), Lucio Bonelli; editor, Pablo Barbieri; music, Diego Vainer; production designer, Sebastian Roses; sound (Dolby Digital), Jesica Suarez. San Sebastian confirms market uptick
SAN SEBASTIAN -- With three deals closed at the fest -- Spain (Alta), Argentina (Alfa) and Portugal (Alambique) -- Julie Delpy's dysfunctional family comedy "Skylab" proved a sales standout at the 59th San Sebastian Film Festival, which closes Saturday. But it wasn't the only title sparking trading at the Spanish-world's biggest sprocket opera. Spanish distributors that have weathered the crisis best -- Golem, Alta Films, A Contracorriente -- all made deals on San Sebastian titles and beyond. Evidencing a new industry emphasis at San Sebastian under new director Jose Luis Rebordinos, two of Europe's most important players -- France's Wild Bunch and Spain's Apaches Ent. -- used San Sebastian to unveil significant news: Wild Bunch's acquisition of a majority stake in Spanish distribution company Vertigo; and Apaches' creation of low-budget label Mapache and TV division Apachete. On the sales agent pick-up front, Latin American pic specialists such as FiGa and M-Appeal made the running. Meanwhile, with Spain still taking top honors beside Japan and the U.S. as one of the toughest markets to sell to in the world, Spain's San Sebastian fest is emerging as an ever more important event: the key that turns the door into Spain. FiGa moved Thursday to take North and Latin America sales rights on San Sebastian Competition title "Blood of My Blood," from Portugal's Joao Canijo. A Lisbon family drama, "Blood" took a special mention Thursday from the jury of San Sebastian's TVE-Another Look Award. FiGa had already announced at the Spanish fest that it would handle international on Chilean Rodrigo Marin's "Zoologico." M-Appeal closed world sales at San Sebastian on Isaki Lacuesta's Competition title "The Double Steps." Rubbing shoulders in San Sebastian Competish with "Skylab," a second Films Distribution title, "11 Flowers," co-produced by France's Full House, has initiated sales, selling to three high-caliber distributors: France's Haut et Court, Australia's Palace Films and Israel's New Cinema. After its Toronto world preem, "Americano" was acquired for Benelux (Imagine Film Distribution), Brazil (California Filmes) and Colombia (Babilla Cine), France's Bac Films announced at San Sebastian. (MPI Media Group acquisition of North American rights to Americano was announced out of Toronto.) At San Sebastian, Golem Distribution closed Spanish rights to Filipino auteur Brillante Mendoza's thriller "Captured." Adolfo Blanco's Barcelona-based A Contracorriente has taken Spanish rights on Philippe Falardeau's "Monsieur Lazhar." Also at the Spanish fest, Golem co-founder Josetxo Moreno inked two other high-profile European titles. With Wild Bunch's exec Gael Nouaille, Moreno negotiated Spanish rights to France's 2012 Oscar entry, local B.O. hit dramedy "Declaration of War." Meanwhile, German sales company Films Boutique's CEO Jean Christophe Simon closed Spain with Golem on Alexander Sokurov's Venice Golden Lion winner "Faust." In San Sebastian, The Match Factory sold Locarno Golden Leopard winner "Back to Stay" to Wiesner Distribution for Puerto Rico. A bevy of pics all came into San Sebastian sans sales agent and played to upbeat receptions: Brit actor Dexter Fletcher's crime caper "Wild Bill," Colombia-set road movie "Pescador," from Ecuador's Sebastian Cordero, and, in Films in Progress, Marialy Rivas' "Young and Wild." The Match Factory's sales head Brigitte Suarez reported "very strong interest" from Latin American distributors on Benito Zambrano's Competish entry "The Sleeping Voice." There were also warm reactions for Ignacio Ferreras' senior citizen buddy comedy "Wrinkles," the top-ranking Spanish pic through Friday in San Sebastian's new directors Euskaltel Youth Award, and for David Trueba's 6 Sales-repped period chamber piece "Madrid, 1987." Industry attendance climbed 13% from 2010's 984 accreditations at the festival's Industry Club to 1,117 this year. The international sales market, having bottomed out, is enjoying an uptick in prices paid and competition, FD partner Nicolas Brigaud Robert told Variety, citing bullish sales at Venice, Toronto and San Sebastian on "Skylab," "11 Flowers," "Cafe de Flore" and "Monsieur Lazhar" (see separate story). San Sebastian still remains a festival hub for movies and professionals from Spain and Latin America, Suarez added. Rebordinos announced that he hopes to launch a significant Europe-Latin America co-production forum at 2012's San Sebastian. He already has a basis on which to work. September (Eylul)
A Ca Film production. (International sales: Arti Prods., Istanbul.) Produced by Turker Korkmaz. Directed, written by Cemil Agacikoglu. With: Turgay Aydin, Gorken Yeltan, Elena Polyanskaya, Ayten Uncuoglu, Mete Domezer, Serkan Keskin.A mood piece in a minor key, "September" traces the shift in a marriage caused by a wife's mysterious illness. As her body betrays her, cutting her breath short, she turns inward and away from her husband who cannot bridge the widening gap. Relying on empty spaces, fading light and silences, Turkish photographer-turned-helmer Cemil Agacikoglu's debut feature limns the husband's sense of superfluity and newfound vulnerability toward another woman actively seeking his help. Lacking the scope of countryman Nuri Bilge Ceylan's mournful walkabouts, "September" nonetheless reps a quiet fest-bound find. Yusuf (Turgay Aydin), a gentle, introverted goldsmith, cannot sufficiently reassure his sick, frightened wife, Asli (Gorken Yeltan). He goes from sitting silently by her hospital bed to winding gold strips in the workshop above his boss' jewelry store, to pacing his empty apartment, to finally ferrying his wife back to her home village once she regains strength. Meanwhile, Asli's young Russian wardmate (Elena Polyanskaya), beaten by her rich protector and needing sanctary, calls Yusuf, who finds her a hotel room. Helmer Agacikoglu grants these locations tremendously vivid presence, exerting a gravitational pull that anchors his otherwise slight interpersonal story.Camera (color, HD), Ali Olcay Gozkaya; editor, Taner Sarf; music, Dogan Doru; art director, Eda Tutuk. Kaira Pitt Takes The Area At 'Moneyball' Premiere
This opening evening, like a lot of recent ones within the lockout-shadowed sports world, almost did not happen. Kaira Pitt's "Moneyball" was shutdown in the summer time of '09, just days before production ended up being to begin, over concerns that director Steven Soderbergh's take wouldn't attract roaring crowds in the multiplex. But Pitt predicted something of the ninth-inning rally, and something new director later (Bennett Burns of "Capote" fame), the David-versus.-Goliath tale concerning the Concord Athletics shot to existence and, almost 2 yrs later, opened in the Major league baseball team's stadium on Monday evening. Pitt was available underneath the stadium floodlights, as were costars Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman, plus Burns, film writer Aaron Sorkin and ballplayers including current A's designated hitter Hideki Matsui. Photos of Pitt and Matsui provided an intriguing contrast towards the film's central message that the small market team can best its more potent rivals with the savvy utilization of record analysis. As the 2002 A's featured within the flick could win 103 games as well as their division title, the present team is battling through another losing season their 4th in 5 years. If the relaxation of baseball has swept up towards the once-outdoors-the-box-but-now-commonplace approach that gm Billy Bean (performed by Pitt) developed or maybe so-known as sabermetrics is definitely an overhyped phenomenon is really a question for an additional day (and, possibly, another blog). Monday would be a evening for 2 support beams from the entertainment world to get together and celebrate something beloved both in sports and Hollywood: an underdog story. "They are men which are employed in an unfair game," Pitt told MTV News lately concerning the '02 squad. "They're an organization without any money attempting to fight it's David versus. Goliath. How could they be likely to be competitive? How could they be likely to stand an opportunity? They cannot fight another guys' fight they are likely to lose each time. These men needed to re-think it and re-think the things they used to do They are Galileo, in this way, rising against an institution that's not really happy about the subject questioning their norms."
